Our Roads, Our Safety

Background to 'Our Roads, Our Safety'

Abbeydale RoadLondon Road and Abbeydale Road are two of the busiest roads in Sheffield. The areas surrounding these roads are popular with local shoppers and people going to restaurants. Wolseley Road acts as an important link road between these two routes providing access to local businesses and houses.

These roads are used by large numbers of people driving, walking and cycling. This can lead to congestion and problems with road safety.

Over a five year period there has been a number of reported road accidents along London Road, Abbeydale Road and Wolseley Road:

  • A quarter of the road accidents involved pedestrians, 40% of which were children;
  • A high proportion of accidents involved cyclists, which is three times the average number of accidents for similar roads in Sheffield; and
  • Those aged between 17 and 34 years old are more likely to be involved in an accident.

Nearly all of the road accidents have occurred due to road users being distracted whilst using the road, whether this is because pedestrians have not taken care whilst crossing the road or drivers have been distracted whilst driving. We have found this out by talking to people who have been involved in accidents.
